If you were to ask my husband this question he would say none!! And I say the more, the merrier! I may have an obsession with throw blankets and I blame Anthropologie, West Elm and CB2 for this, if they could stop making beautiful throw blankets then I would not have so many!! Seriously though, we have a few tips on which rooms in your home throw blankets work best.
Quick Guide on Throw blanket placement:
- Folded in thirds on the arm of the lounge
- Draped on the seat of your lounge/sofa
- Draped on the back of your lounge
- Pinched or gathered horizontally at the foot of your bed
- Draped diagonally on the Chaise.
- Choose the colour of your throws to complement your home’s style.
- Throws add the finishing touch to your style.
Living room Throw Blankets
It is a must to have at least one throw on your sofa or lounge, as they are stylish and versatile, something on a cold winter’s night to snuggle under. I like to choose a thick, chunky blanket large enough to cover myself and the little people in my house. I drape my throw on my lounge diagonally across the seating or chaise I prefer a less structured look for chunky blankets, this also requires less effort and breaks up the ample space on my chaise. I also have a beautiful basket in my lounge with more throw blankets tossed in, just drape one of the corners over the edge touching the floor. If you prefer a tailored look for a more formal living space, then a thinner blanket folded over the arm might suit you, giving your lounge room a tidy aesthetic. You might opt to drape a lightweight folded throw over the back seat of the lounge tucking the bottom edge under the seat cushion and finish the look with a cushion placed on the throw.
The Bedroom Throw Blanket
Throws on the bed have become an essential part of bed styling; they help add more colour and texture to your bedroom and complete the bedding decor. You might like multiple throws on your bed, thick chunky faux fur paired with a thin cotton throw that can be draped over one corner to create a visually inviting look, or linen and wool combinations to enhance the coziness. You may prefer one woollen chunky throw rumpled and gathered at the foot of the bed or a patterned quilt to cover two-thirds of the bed. Coverlets are a popular choice; they pair perfectly with plain colour bedding; use most of your bed space to display the coverlet and choose a contrasting colour with texture.
I cannot go past a gorgeous vintage coverlet, and in the hot summer months, I use my coverlet instead of the duvet. I use fluffy fleece blankets in the kid’s rooms. They like velvety softness, and they are more affordable. I usually drape these on the end of their beds, but they do not stay there for long; they seem to live wrapped around them!!
Occasional Chair Throw
This is another excellent place to add a throw if you have an occasional chair in your lounge or bedroom. The chair becomes an inviting place to sit, read a book or enjoy a quiet cup of tea. You can contrast the throw with a cushion by draping an unfolded throw over the seat and back of the chair or ruffly fold the throw over the arm. This is a great place to add some texture to make the chair stand out; try not to over clutter the space and one cushion will complete the look perfectly
Bench seat, ottoman or footstool throws
I have a bench seat at the bottom of my bed, and placing a throw here finishes the look of that room; I remember my throw folded at one end of the bench, just hanging over a touch. You may have an ottoman in the lounge room or reading room that, if big enough, is a perfect place for a throw to be draped. This might be a nice thin woollen blanket perfect for spreading over your lap on a cooler day. Try to use a contrasting colour to the ottoman or bench seat, just a little bit darker than the furniture, to break up the view.
Throw Blankets hanging on a Ladder
You might like to hang your throw blankets on a display ladder next to your couch or in your bedroom; I am not a fan of this, as I prefer to reach over and grab the throw when I have finally sat down on the lounge. Still, I do recognise the visual appeal of a vintage wooden ladder with beautiful blankets displayed. You might like the idea of not having to arrange your cushions around the throw on the lounge, preferring to hang the blanket up. There are endless choices of ladders available, and hanging ladders with beautiful leather straps make a stylish storage solution for your blankets. The choice is yours.
Outdoor living throw blankets
Throws are a must in the outdoors, placed on an outdoor chaise or lounge. This is one place where my throws are always used as the nights become cooler; it’s nice for guests to feel comfortable and warm and enjoy the outdoor space for longer. When we have several guests over I place my basket of blankets from the lounge room outside for everyone to partake. I prefer wool blankets for the outdoor area. They provide extra warmth and comfort.
We hope this helped you with your throw blanket styling, you can use a throw anywhere regardless of the season the difficult part will be stopping yourself from buying too many!!
